From the New York Tribune,
June 10, 1906 - Americans Lead the Movement - To
the great hurly-burly of modern travel the native of the
United States is, perhaps, the most conspicuous figure.
It has been well said of him (by H. T. Tuckerman) that
"the American is by nature locomotive: he believes in
change of air for health, change of residence for
success, change of society for improvement." The size of
his own country makes him regardless of distance; his
taste and temperament make him desire all that he has
not; it is incumbent on him, as the youngest of mankind,
to abroad to see the material embodiment of the
historical, artistic, religious, and
literary civilization in which he has his roots. The desire for
movement leads to such a rapid multiplication of moans of
communication in Ins own country that it is credibly reported
that the average American translates nulla dies sine linea as
“no day without its new railroad." An American
railway company thinks nothing of making a detour of thirty
miles just to allow its passengers a passing glimpse of Niagara
Falls.
From the
Times-Dispatch in Richmond, VA. appeared this on the
"perfect Vacation" on May 1, 1910, just when families were
making their summer travel
plans.
"THE Ideal Vacation
involves a complete change of scene and living
conditions.
For the Easterner living at a low altitude, and cooped up in
the office, the home or the school a good part of the time, no vacation more fully meets
these requirements than one spent in Colorado. There life
in the open air?a dry, sunny, tonic, mountain air? soon
renews the vitality of mind and body, gives the keenest
zest for the enjoyment of every moment and best of all,
charges the whole being with an overflowing supply of new
energy upon which to draw during the coming year. If these
are the vacation results you want, then go to Colorado.
The great variety of things you will do there, where you
will spend your time, what it will cost you at the
different places? and you will be surprised at the
reasonable cost? These are all shown in great detail in
our Colorado Utah handbook and our Estes Park (Col.)
folder for 1910, just published. A copy is yours free for
the asking. Remember, too, that the Burlington, with its
five daily electric-lighted trains to Denver is the best
and shortest way to get there. $30 round trip from
Chicago; $25 from St. Louis every day. Similar low rates
from other points. Just write "Colorado" on a postal, sign
your name and address, and mail to me, and I"It sent you
our Colorado handbook and give you other useful
information. If you would like copies sent to friends,
please give me their names and addresses
also."

Excerpt from the
above:
But within easy
reach of all New Yorkers
is some of the finest scenery in the
world. The noble Hudson, which flows beside the
city, affords most picturesque and attractive
scenes, rivaling, If not surpassing those of
the famous Rhine. The voyage through the
Highlandsis all that the most exacting lover of
nature could demand, and Is within the reach of almost
every one. It can easily be included in journeying to
resorts in Orange, Sullivan
and Delaware counties, to the Catskills,
the Adirondacks or the Green Mountains. Another
delightful water trip is that up the East River and
through Hell Gate into the Sound, and this can be
included in all trips to Connecticut. Massachusetts,
Rhode Island, Maine and New Hampshire points, Including the White
Mountains, Mount Desert, Newport and hundreds of other
places to which visitors are attracted. The trip by vessel
to Portland Is also a most delightful one, taking the
traveler beyond the smooth water out on the real ocean and
Including going out of sight of land. The trip down the
St. Lawrence from the Thousand Islands to Quebec and up
the Saguenay includes some of the most novel and
entrancing of the beauties of natural scenery. In the
other direction the trip up the Great Lakes to Duluth.
"the zenith city of the unsalted seas." is a fresh water
voyage that includes almost as much in the way of variety
and enjoyment as a salt water trip across the
ocean.
