Old toiletry ads were kind of scarce back at the end of the 1800's to the beginning of the 1900's. Personal grooming was not like it is today and could be deemed disgusting by today's standards. Here's some interesting facts from 100 years ago as this page was made 11/14/2009. Most women washed their hair once a month.

The average life expectancy was  47  years

Fuel for cars was sold in drug stores only 

Only 14% of homes had a bathtub.

Only 8% of homes had a telephone.

There were only 8,000 cars and only 144 miles

of paved roads.

The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.

Most women only washed their hair once  a month, and used

Borax or egg yolks for shampoo

Treating Grey Hair - The treatment for bringing out the hair is just as good to prevent grayness, which results from contractions of the vessels, so that the pigment can not enter the colorless tube of the hair. This may result from severe cold, which contracts the minute blood vessels, or from grief and anxiety, or from deposits of lime in the vessels, which cause the grayness of age.

Elderly persons will find lime juice and glycerine of great benefit for decomposing this chalky deposit. The following is an excellent recipe for its removal.

Take half a pint of lime juice or lemon juice, one-quarter of a pint of rose-water, six table-spoonfuls rectified spirit, added generally and stirred or shaken. After twenty-four hours strain through muslin, and add two and one half ounces of glycerine and half a dram of lemon or cedrat, and shake well. It will be fragrant and Inviting. It should be milky, without sediment.
